General notes: Differences between Colossus
and Majestic classes are not appreciable externally and
are confined to internal accommodation on mess decks, which is
of improved type in latter. All are insulated for tropical service
and partially air-conditioned. Besides Colossus being lent to
France as stated above, two (Magnificent and Warrior)
have been transferred to Royal Canadian
Navy; and two were completed as maintenance aircraft carriers
Perseus and Pioneere.
Constructional notes: In some of these ships, flight deck
is reported to have been strenghthened to take aircraft of over
8 tons in weight. Sponsons can be dismantled to the extent of
3.5 feet on either side if necessary to allow for passage through
Panama Canal.
Engineering notes: Engine-room and boiler-rooms are arranged
en echelon. In Theseus, one propeller is four-bladed
and one three-bladed, in order to minimise vibration. |
